How I Created a Manga with AI

Before I say anything, this is my work. Did this over Easter for my 7 year old son as we brainstormed on a world and story. You can read it over on my works tab.

Here’s 6 steps on creating a Manga with zero art skills using AI. I will have a detailed post on generating specific results with specific examples, go over AI tokenization and how to create character consistency in following posts. But here’s just a quick rundown:

1. Create an outline / script / world build – employ ChatGPT to assist you

2. Map out the panels and text as an outline and have an estimate on the number of panels per page and number of pages and page layout

3. Find reference images in Google or other image platforms

4. Use Midjourney for original artwork

5. For scene creation prompt:

- Reference Image prompt 1, 2

- Composition (aerial view, closeup, birds eye, side angle, etc)

- Medium (‘photo/image/illustration of a XYZ,’ you can also add style adjective before

medium like ‘renaissance style painting of a…’)

- Environment (café / forest)

- Lighting, Colour (these can be embellished in 2 or 3 or as adjectives in 5)

- Additional Objects

- Text Weightings / Style Weightings / Image weightings

- Aspect Ratio

- Engine pick

6. For character and character consistency prompt:

- Reference Image prompt 1,2

- Composition (aerial view, closeup, birds eye, side angle, etc)

- Medium (‘photo/image/illustration of a XYZ,’ you can also add style adjective before medium like ‘renaissance style painting of a…’)

- Subject (grey haired old man with sweatshirt etc)

- Context (jumping around / inside a)

- Environment (café / forest)

- Lighting Color (these can be embellished in 2 or 3 or at the end

- Text Weightings / Style Weightings / Image weightings

- Aspect Ratio

- Engine pick

For styles, I recommend visiting the styles library from Andrei Kovalev:

This is essential in mixing and matching styles and deriving your own unique style. In my instance for scenes, I used the styles of various Japanese mangaka and anime creators together with some American Styles in a mix of both Niji and v 5 to achieve my affect. Niji is the new anime engine for Midjourney.
